By law, all letting agents must be part of a redress scheme. This ensures that you can further any complaint you have against your agent to a mediator organisation, with the possibility of compensation.

All letting agents must be part of a Client Money Protection (CMP) scheme, which ensures you are entitled to claim any monies lost through misappropriation of your funds or if the agent goes bust through the CMP scheme.

Good letting agents are also experts in the latest legislation, regulation and laws in the private rental sector, meaning they will ensure your property and any tenancy agreements will be legal and follow legislation.

Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the independent regulatory office in charge of upholding information rights in the interest of the public. The organisation covers the following:

  • Data Protection Act

  • Freedom of Information Act

  • Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR)

  • Environmental Information Regulations

  • INSPIRE Regulations

  • The re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations

Property Redress Scheme (PRS)

A Redress Scheme is a scheme which allows consumers to escalate a complaint they have against the member of the scheme.


The main purpose of the redress scheme is to resolve or settle unresolved complaints from consumers who have suffered a loss as a result of the actions of the member.

All property agents and professionals that carry out estate, lettings and property management work in the property industry have a legal responsibility to join an authorised redress scheme.


The Property Redress Scheme (PRS) is authorised by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and National Trading Standards Estate and Letting Agent Team (NTSEALT) to provide redress for estate, lettings and property management agents

National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA)

The National Residential Landlords Association is the UK's largest membership organisation for private residential landlords, supporting and representing over 90,000 members. 

NRLA seek a fair legal and regulatory environment for both landlord and tenant and actively lobby the Government on behalf of its members.


In addition, NRLA representatives run regular branch meetings and landlord courses in over 100 locations throughout the UK and also provide an important link for our members with local authorities and fellow landlords.

Tenant Deposit Protection

Tenant’s deposit must be protected in one of the three tenancy deposit protection schemes that the government has approved.

There are two types of deposit protection schemes:

  • Custodial: the tenant pays you as a landlord the deposit and then you pay it to the scheme. The deposit is held with the scheme for the duration of the tenancy and returned minus deductions at the end of the tenancy once any disputes have been settled.

  • Insurance: the tenant pays you as a landlord and you pay a premium to the scheme to insure the deposit.

Professional Indemnity & Public Liability Insurance

Professional indemnity insurance covers the cost of defending a business against allegations of professional negligence (such as giving your client incorrect or wrongful advice) and if unsuccessful, the cost of damages awarded against you. 

Public and product liability insurance covers the cost of defending a business (including damages awarded against you if unsuccessful) if someone is injured, or their property damaged, which arises from you going about your business or supplying products.
